The autumn workshop 2017 of the aac Academy for Architectural Culture for the first time was dedicated to the architecture and cultural exchange between Germany and Iran. For this, the integration of Iran’s first airfield, the former Qale Morghi military airfield, into the capital Tehran’s urban life was chosen as workshop assignment. A scenario currently being discussed in Tehran. Thus,

aac was again able to work on a workshop assignment close to reality of which the results make a valuable contribution to the public in Tehran.

Due to the Qale Morghi airport having been
closed down, an inner-city open area of approx. 270 hectare developed, comparable in size and location with the area of the Tempelhofer Feld in Berlin, which shall become, in the first place, a newly designed park for Tehran’s citizens in the style of an Iranian garden. Furthermore, four centres focusing on religion, municipal administration, science and cultural interaction respectively, are proposed.

The north-western site of a recent master plan proposal had been chosen as nucleus for the development of the overall area. On this site, the participants were to design the centre for cultural interaction as a place of community, communication and integration, an urban design ensemble of cultural and events centre, library, multiplex and bazaar.
