During the aac autumn 2023 workshop “High Street Alive - Placing vibrant spaces inside former city centre magnets” we have been exploring how the quality of cohabitation in our city centres will determine their future attractiveness and vitality by looking at an exemplary department store structure on Hamburg's Mönckebergstrasse.

Recent developments have not only led to the disappearance of the availability of the range of goods on offer in city centres, but also to the loss of the magnetic effect that strategically located department stores once used to have had in the vitality of our cities.

With a focus on the quality of co-existence of all users in a mix of residential, office and commercial uses, as well as public facilities and restaurants for the location, our design objectives were to revitalise the area for all times of the day and to create an attractive urbanisation of the city centre in the long term.

Designs were conceived and developed in internationally composed groups. In addition to tutorials and interim presentations, the workshop was accompanied by a public lecture programme.

This workshop was under the guidance of Dipl.-Ing. Architekt Stephan Schütz und Dipl.-Ing. Architekt Nikolaus Goetze mit Dipl.-Ing. Architekt Nicolas Pomränke.

We look forward to your visit!
