Shan Fan

Tradition – Transformation – Modernity

As one of the first Chinese art students, Shan Fan went to Germany at the beginning of the 1980s in order to study pure art, more specifically to Hamburg, where he has been living ever since and where he is managing the well-reputed Design Factory design school. Drawing on his own artist’s biography and his intercultural background, he will speak on the changing traditions in Chinese painting and society. He develops a cultural history of bamboo in China – a plant of central meaning in Chinese culture. The transformation of its role as a traditional material in Chinese art as well as architecture, throughout the generations, gives a rich account of China’s path to modernity and changes in design strategies.
