aac autumn workshop 2025
03.09. to 26.09.2025 on the Rainvilleterrasse campus in Hamburg
Description of Workshop Topic
This year's aac autumn workshop will focus on how future campus space requirements can be met while taking existing buildings and property boundaries into account.
Large university hospitals are subject to constant structural and architectural change due to demographic, social and technical developments. This also applies to Cologne University Hospital.
In order to meet these changing requirements and ensure the future viability of the site, existing buildings are constantly being expanded, replaced or restructured.
Due to the location of the Cologne University Hospital in a densely populated urban area, there is also a need to meet increasing demand through redensification. There is also a requirement to treat the existing buildings with care and to plan in a resource-efficient manner in the interests of sustainability.
The concept for the conversion and subsequent use of a building on the site that will no longer be needed in future will be characterised by a dual focus on optimal redensification and maximum preservation of the existing building.
The total area extends beyond the building site to the neighbouring property, which is also to be redeveloped. The various usage modules are to be placed across the entire construction site, thereby optimising functional and spatial connections. The overarching goal is to create high-quality recreational areas for users, both indoors and outdoors, thereby creating a medical campus with a soothing atmosphere.
Description of Workshop Format
The designs will be conceptualised and developed in international groups. In addition to tutorials and interim presentations, the workshop will be accompanied by a public lecture programme.
The workshop begins with a excursion to Cologne in Germany.
Following the workshop, the results will be shown in the form of an exhibition on the premises of the aac in Hamburg.
